Playa Palenque, Panama
When you think of Panama, you think woven raffia fedora hats, the word isthmus (a strip connecting two bodies of land surrounded by water – Scrabble score 12), and cigars. Well, we do anyway. We also think of Playa Palenque, on the eco-friendly Isla Palenque. Just 15 minutes by boat from Boca Chica on the mainland, this “playa” is the biggest of twelve beaches on the island at just over 0.75 miles long.
The secluded, crescent-shaped stretch enjoys a constant toasty temperature all year round due to its position only nine degrees north of the equator – definitely one for the dedicated tanorexics. Strewn with volcanic rocks, the beach is both rugged and relaxing, with gentle waves providing a soft bass beat to a choir of tropical birds and breathtaking sunsets so gorgeous that they were captured by photographer Adam Elliot (just to name drop).
Need another reason to go? Stay at the new Amble Resort, which opens mid-2012 – an eco-luxe retreat with wooden thatched huts and a sustainable take on sophisticated travel. We’re sold – and we’re counting down the days.
