Stiniva Beach, Vis Island, Croatia
Careful, Hvar. Though we’ll always love you, your position as Queen of Croatia’s Dalmatian islands/our hearts is under threat. Because we’ve got our sunnies, and booming hearts, set on the island gem of Vis.
We’ve long been in lust with Croatia’s string of unblemished beaches and sparkling blue waters, but when it comes to Vis, a ferry-ride from coastal city Split, it might just be true love. Vineyards, orchards, palms and pines tangle into the rolling green backdrop. Its relatively undeveloped tourist industry means that between the swathes of lush green and lapping blue bays clings cute, unimposing architecture, all shabby-chic stone-and-shutter types.
Head to the island’s south coast, hike down a steep path and you’ll find a place where dramatic limestone cliffs clasp a picture-perfect pebbly golden cove. On Stiniva, the still Adriatic waters are as welcoming as the sheltering rock faces towering protectively over you. A perfect 30-metre stretch of smooth pebbles, Stiniva proves that when it comes to beautiful beaches, size – and sand – don’t always matter.
