Porto Katsiki, Lefkada
This week we thought it was about time we called up an old friend – the Greek islands. Call us unimaginative but we couldn’t help it. It’s August and, right now, we all know the sun shines best among our olive-loving amigos. This one though, we’re particularly proud of. Our Beach of the Week is Porto Katsiki, hidden away on the west coast of the island of Lefkada, which lies relatively un-trod, a mere two hours south of Corfu.
It’s the blue-sky water that is a real feast for the senses. You feel like stretching out a hand and stroking the crisp, nourishing curls of turquoise as they lap up gently up onto the chalk-white pebble beach. Actually scrap that, we felt the mad impulse to dash, sending stones flying in all directions, and diving face first into the crashing white spray.
Returning back to reality at Beach HQ, all this talk of Greece has clearly unleashed our inner philosopher. Because this week we have a question: Could pebble beaches be better than sand?
We’ve thought about it long and hard. For one, no messiness, itchiness or crunchy sandwiches. You can wave goodbye to clumpy sand hair too, and the towels on hire-car seats on the way home. And as if we couldn’t be persuaded sooner, the stones on Porto Katsiki are small, smooth and round enough to dart over without dancing like your parents on New Year’s Eve. It’s a fact then – a new Beach Tomato exclusive – we love pebbles!
And so back to Porto Katsiki is its simple beach brilliance. Soft pebbles, warm water, clear skies, a formula we know well but will never tire of – a fresh face for an old friend.
