Cala Boix, Ibiza
There is more to Ibiza than San Antonio and super clubs. There is more to it than the handsome hedonists and in-your-face glamour of Las Salinas. Behind Ibiza’s party face is a softer, far gentler side - epitomosed by our Beach of the Week, Cala Boix. Up on the White Isle’s pretty east coast, the beach at Boix is the place to recoup from the night before. Going against the golden grain, Cala Boix is the island’s only dark sand beach and the setting of this Balearic beaut is simply stunning. Enclosed by craggy cliffs, this is a blissed-out bay that feels a far, far away from the Sunset Strip.
More off-the-beaten-track than most (all the better to escape the swarms of summer), head to the arty village of San Carlos, follow the road to Es Figueral and spot the sign to turn right to Cala Boix. Down 39 steps (yep we’ve counted), lies the pretty 100m-long Mediterranean sun spot which, aside from a couple of locals and passing yachties, you can have all to yourself. And when the munchies roll in, hot foot it a couple of bays along to Cala Mastella and the moustachioed pescatarian dream of ‘El Bigote’. Perched on the water’s edge, expect the freshest fish on the island washed down with tinto de verano - an easy-peasy sangria of red wine with lemonade… It’s the perfect Ibicean beach day.
