Beach of the Week 13.03.2012

Hikkaduwa Beach, Sri Lanka | Beach of the Week | BeachesBEACH: Hikkaduwa Beach

WHERE: Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka

WHY: Tropical fish and colourful coral are high on the priority list for many a tourist here – but we at Beach Tomato HQ love that it’s also a great beach for catching a wave or two.  There’s also an awesome music festival called Hikkafest held on the beach every July/August – cool DJ’s + great surf? Sign us up!

HOW: Hikkaduwa beach lies 3.5 hours southwest of the capital, Columbo. Simply hop on a public bus – they’re frequent, very cheap, but busy – so be prepared to stand!

H2O TONE: Mint julep

SAND TONE: Almond macaroon

STAY: Created by surfers, artists and chefs for their family and friends (so the website states), Sunbeach Hotel offers accommodation to suit all tastes. Our advice? Stay in the 150-year-old “jungle-side” annex. It’s wild.

WHEN: It can get pretty rainy from May – October, but that won’t affect the heat.
