Each week we bring you one of the best beaches in the world as our beach of the week. This week’s best beach is one of the most beautiful beaches in Cornwall.
BEACH: Gwithian Beach
WHERE: Longboarding fan? Just north of Hayle on the Cornish coast, this beach has longboarding waves that could rival that of surf Mecca, Newquay – but with significantly less surfers. So if you do visit, just don’t tell anyone we told you…
WHY: Aside from it being an awesome beach to learn to surf on, Gwithian has some magical sand dunes that are perfect for a lazy strolls and sunset-gazing. Alternatively, grab a body board and use it to sand surf down them. Fun for all ages.
HOW: The closest town to Gwithian Beach is Hayle, we suggest hiring a car if you have your surfboard with you, however trains and buses are frequent. Travelling from Newquay? Catch the 547 greyhound bus which travels daily and takes 90 mins.
H2O TONE: Terrapin Teal
SAND TONE: Custard Cream
STAY: Nestled behind the sand dunes are Gwithian Sands Chalets, a collection of quaint and colourful lodges that are perfect for chilling out in after a long day’s surfing (our favourite is Sunnyside chalet, owned by a lovely woman named Maria).
WHEN: Great whatever the weather (as long as you’re in a warm wetsuit) but if you’re chasing the sun, keep your fingers crossed and head down throughout May-September.
