Anakena Beach, Easter Island
Imagine sunning yourself on one of the most remote places on the planet. Anakena Beach, on the north coast of the South Pacific’s teeny Easter Island, with swaying palms, oh-so-blue water and soft sand, is pretty much the blueprint for far-flung tanning territory.
With a fascinating history (Captain Cook, cannibalism, slaves, etc ), iconic moai statues casting their shadows, wild horses roaming the eerie landscape and hikes up gigantic volcanic craters, Easter Island might look like the long-lost cousin of the Scottish highlands but, clearly, the two are at polar ends of the geographical gene pool. And, like a DNA test on The Jeremy Kyle Show, the toasty South Pacific temperature and stunning tropical beach only serve to confirm it.
Down on Anakena, with its gasp-drawing crystal-clear water, divers take the plunge, while surfers rave about the waves. Set foot on this rugged island of isolation and make a beeline for the beach – it’s the ultimate way to unwind from the stresses of a world, oh-so far away.
WHEN: year round but chillier in July and Aug
