Ditch Plains Beach, Montauk, Long Island, USA
In joint number one position as our favourite US coastline (essentially, there are only two, but it’d be like picking a favourite child and we’ve got enough Beach love to go around) and in the aftermath of Irene, this week we’re showing our fellow Beachies on the East Coast a little solidarity. And so the sandy surf spot of Ditch Plains Beach in Montauk on Long Island, is our Beach of the Week winner.
Forget what you think you know about the Hamptons, neighbouring Montauk is a beaut of a laidback beach town; its craggy coast complete with gorgeous stretches of golden sand. Forget the palatial beachfront pads of star-studded Sagaponack, Montauk is all about its charming guesthouses and quaint fishing town feel. Down on the southeast end of the island, the cliff-backed beach at Ditch Plains is a mecca for local surf guys and girls. Boasting the East Coast’s most consistent waves, the breaking waters here are a haven for weekending New Yorkers and lucky locals who call the Hamptons home.
Head to these sandy shores in September and you’ll miss the Hamptons’ hoards who have now been and gone. Basking in the September sun (our favourite time to fly transatlantic), this is the perfect place to line up your longboard.
