With 1000km of killer coastline curving its way around chic beach towns like affluent Ajaccio, craggy Corsica, sitting out in the Med, satisfies our yearnings for lush landscape, soft sand and a touch of luxe.
Out on a snag of south-western Corsica, Ajaccio’s Capo di Feno is a 2-4-1 sort of a beach deal – with not one but two fine sandy stretches to choose from. But there can only be one Beach of the Week and while Grand Capo – the bigger (both in actual size and reputation) of the two – is one of the island’s most famed surfing spots, we’re always one to plump for the underdog. So over the dividing grassy knoll we go to quiet, pretty Petit Capo. Think chalk white sand lapped by clear blue waves, an untamed Mediterranean backdrop and not a soul to shake you from your sun-drenched snoozes.
As if the Corsicans weren’t content with their Île de beauté’s picture perfect beaches, fine food and oh-so-French ambiance, this is a land stacked with undulating hills and striking mountains. We just can’t help but wonder why native Napoléon ever thought the grass was greener (or sand softer), but then Monsieur Bonaparte always did have grand ideas…
