Baía dos Porcos, Fernando de Noronha, Brazil
With this kind of view we probably don’t need to elaborate on why the volcanic archipelago of Fernando de Noronha, off Brazil’s northeast coast, is where we’ve headed for this week’s Beach of the Week. Alas, we will, because that’s our job…
It’s wedding week at Beach Tomato and since the thought of being married fills us with all sort of fears about becoming a bit dull we thought we’d seek out a honeymoon destination with a difference. Part of a protected marine park and UNESCO heritage site, the 21 dramatic drops in the ocean that make up Noronha come with crystalline waters, an immense underwater world and a truly tropical backdrop.
These are the sands for a wild romance and there are more than 17 stunners to choose from on the main island alone, but we’ve found a soft spot for, and on, beautiful Baía dos Porcos. Nestled on Noronha’s north coast, Porcos is famed for its stunning views over to ‘Dos Hermanos’ – the two craggy rocks that rise from the clear blue – while the beach’s leftover lava has created protected pools to paddle in.
Gaining a rep as Brazil’s go-to eco spot, a trip to Noronha will have you reciting Darwinian musings over a papaya breakfast. Darwin was a big fan and with friendly Lemon sharks swimming in the shores, dolphins bathing in the bays and turtles padding onto shore we’re not surprised. Did we mention the diving…? Visibility up to 60 metres and a Technicolor world below.
So, move over Maldives. With a limited number of visitors at any one time, Fernando de Noronha never, ever, feels crowded – this is not a land of end to end sun loungers and sickening public displays of affection. And whether you have a ring on your finger or not, we’re pretty sure you’ll leave Noronha a little more in love than you were at the start.
WHEN: dry season is Sept – Mar
