Ruth Ferguson, founder of Olga Olsson swimwear, is Latin-inspired with her three favourite Brazilian beaches.
“All of my swimwear is made in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where I spend a lot of time working on designs and production, so it goes without saying that Ipanema is my number one beach of choice. I love the fact you can hang out all day and see so many different friends, catch up, talk nonsense, sleep, swim, listen to music, eat sucol de claudinho and drink coconut water, and then watch the sun go down behind the Two Brothers Mountains with a caipirinha in hand. It makes me so happy. Plus swimwear is a daily uniform so thinking up or testing out new designs in Ipanema is a perfect way to spend an afternoon.
“Secondly, my favourite beach is on a nature reserve outside of Rio, called Prainha (which means little beach). It is incredibly unspoilt and I’ve been known to get up at 5am to get there when all is still and the waves are just perfect. The bay is surrounded by green mountains and sitting on the board out there in the early morning light is one of the best antidotes to the stress that comes with running your own business – great for inspiration too. It is also heaven to surf somewhere where wearing a wetsuit isn’t a requirement, not like the freezing North Sea where I grew up in Scarborough!
“Another favourite beach of mine is Praia Rosa (Rose Beach) in Santa Catarina, in the South of Brazil. It’s away from the tourists of Florianopolis and completely idyllic. After too much city time this beach is so tranquil, with hidden bays that you can swim to, and a perfect place to reconnect with nature and be still. If you are lucky, you will see Franca whales there too.”
