FIVE OF THE BEST | VINTAGE HOTELS

Ever since the Mad Men phenomena took hold, mid-century modern design has never been hotter. Here, Estella Shardlow of Vintage Seekers, shares exclusively with us a round-up of the chicest hotels offering original 1950's and '60's style in a beachside setting...

Hotel Fasano, Rio de Janeiro

Hotel Fasano, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Once upon a time Brazil was a Mecca for mid-century modern design, and the luxurious Hotel Fasano doesn't let us forget this. Its shell may be contemporary – this is the long-awaited first hotel to be entirely designed by Philippe Stark – but inside everything about this Brazilian boutique hotel evokes the Bossa Nova era when the resort first flourished – from iconic pieces by Sergio Rodrigues right down to the staff's vintage-styled uniforms. Sun-worshippers will be thrilled with its oceanfront location on Impanema beach and the rooftop swimming pool.

Book with Beach TomatoBook the Fasano with us and you'll receive a 4 night package for the price of 3 saving £500. Added extras include a box of Brazilian chocolates and a plate of fresh fruit on arrival, a daily newspaper and a room upgrade from Superior Courtyard View Room depending on availability.

* Not valid for Christmas, New Year, Carnival (16-26th Feb) and Brazilian holidays.

Perantzada 1811, Ithaca, Greece

Perantzada 1811, Ithaca, Greece
Danish designer Verner Panton's sleek fiberglass chairs are a long way from home in this boutique art hotel on the tiny Ionian island of Ithaca. Yet furniture by this mid-century master somehow looks just right in the interior of this classical, blue-washed villa. Add Persian carpets, muslin-draped four-poster beds and walls inscribed with Grecian poetry and the effect is marvelously eclectic.

Book with Beach TomatoBook Perantzada 1811 with Beach Tomato and you'll exclusively receive 7 nights for the price of 5.

Double room with sea view from £130 per night.

Ohtel, Wellington, New Zealand

Ohtel, Wellington, New Zealand
This 10-room boutique hotel on Wellington's lively Oriental Bay harbour is scattered throughout with design classics from the '50s and '60s: think quirky ceramics, retro clocks and furniture by iconic names such as Arne Jacobsen and Hans J Wegner. The cubic, concrete building perched on a cliff-side spot is a suitably dramatic setting for owner Alan Blundell's mind-blowing modernist collection.

Book with Beach TomatoBook Ohtel with us and you'll receive a complimentary upgrade plus free wifi and local calls, and you can snooze off the jet lag with the added extra of late check-out.

Studio rooms start from £265 per night.

Riviera South Beach, Miami

Riviera South Beach, Miami, Florida
Often mid-century interiors can mean playful retro brights, however at this South Beach landmark – three minutes from the famous stretch of sand – the style is displayed in its most regal incarnation. Across its secluded apartment-style accommodation the Riviera channels Dorothy Draper's opulent ‘Golden Age of Hollywood' style; all Italian marble, rosewood tables and cowhide rugs with a palette of gold and black – an apt choice considering the hotel's original 1940s architecture.

Book with Beach TomatoBook the Riviera with Beach Tomato and you can receive the following 7 night package saving over £600:

7 nights in a one-bedroom suite
Welcome bottle of champagne
Two in-room spa treatments
Dinner for two at Kung Fu Kitchen & Sushi at The Catalina Hotel (sister hotel)
Daily continental breakfast
Private car transfer to/from Miami International Airport
Two beach chairs every day at the beach club
Complimentary happy hour at sister South Beach Group hotels
Fully stocked fridge with your choice of items (list provided to select prior to arrival)

Hotel Boca Chica

Hotel Boca Chica
Immortalised in the 1963 Elvis Prestley film ‘Fun in Acapulco', this sun-drenched bolthole has been carefully resorted to its original glory. Like the legendary hedonistic resort, Acapulco, in which it lies, vibrant Boca Chica knows how to show guests a good time with a buzzing lounge bar and in-house nightclub. Its footprint-shaped pool overlooks an idyllic cove where the luxury yachts and legendary sunsets compete for attention. The airy rooms are accented with vintage furniture in zingy tropical-fruit shades, and each one has a private terrace with hammock – perfect for lazing with a Pina Colada and watching the Marina panorama at play.
