THE FINALISTS: LOCAL FLAVOUR

Sometimes en vacances you wake up on a morning, still foggy with the jetlag or the rum-head from the night before, and despite the general confusion,  the embracing, home-grown air of your surroundings leaves you in no doubt of where you are or what country you're in (though how you got there may be another matter). Whether it's by local materials, native design or everyday life making its way up to your hotel door, these properties will give you a real taste of the local flavour. • The Beach Hut, Cornwall

The Location: On an isolated stretch of North Cornish coastline backed by rugged cliffs and rolling hills.
The Look: Simple; stripped floorboards, white-washed walls and a wood burner where you can throw on a few logs and look out to sea, mug of hot chocolate in hand.
We Love It Because: It’s the ultimate English coastal cottage – windswept, weather-beaten and incredibly beautiful with a view made for two. Standing alone on the shores of the Cornish seaside, the only sound you are likely to hear from your sumptuous king-size bed is the gentle breaking of waves outside your door.

From £315 per night for a minimum of three nights
    The Beach Hut

  • Almanara, Diani Beach, Kenya

The Location: Dubbed “the Kenyan Maldives”, Diani Beach is just south of Mombasa on Kenya’s Indian Ocean coastline.
The Look: Tucked away between tropical gardens and palm-fringed sand, Almanara’s luxury beach villas are large terracotta coloured houses with wide open archways and authentic African décor.
We Love It Because: Everything about Almanara encourages comfort and relaxation – from heavy carved wooden four-posters draped in white, to low-lit roof terraces covered in comfy daybeds and candles. Sit back, light up a shisha pipe and watch the sun go down over the sea.

From £250 per person per night
    Almanara

  • Blue Atelie, Trancoso, Bahia, Brazil

The Location: Blue Atelie sits on the world renowned sands of Trancoso, in the municipality of Porto Seguro on Brazil’s northeast coast.
The Look: Rustic, romantic and full of colour, this little beachside abode is bursting with local charm. Inside it’s all wooden furniture and slatted windows warmed with colourful cushions and lit by a kaleidoscope of handmade lanterns hanging from the ceiling.
We Love It Because: It is, quite frankly, adorable – in the most stylish sense. Homely, yet infused with elements of contemporary design, Blue Atelie offers cosy home comforts in Brazilian beachside disguise.

    From £150 per night

  • Kaya Mawa, Likoma Island, Lake Malawi

The Location: Kaya Mawa sits on the sleepy island of Likoma, about half way up the shores of Lake Malawi.
The Look: Set into the rocks and with beautiful views out over the lake towards Mozambique, the rooms here are light and airy with large king size beds, private plunge pools and double-ended bathtubs.
We Love It Because: Completely secluded, whilst also sitting literally on the shores of the lake, it doesn’t get much more peaceful than Kaya Mawa. We stayed in Makengulu which sits on its own private island, accessible via a narrow wooden walkway and surrounded by blossoming Bouginvillea. Slip into the water from the private deck suspended over the lake and spend your days swimming in the calm warm water.

    From £240
    Kaya Mawa

Book Kaya Mawa with Beach Tomato and you’ll receive a complimentary upgrade and free bottle of bubbly on arrival. We can’t help but spoil our fellow beach lovers…

  • Azulik, Tulum, Mexico

The Location: The sleepy city of Tulum sits on the Yucatán Peninsula, on the southeast Mexican coast.
The Look: Constructed from local hardwood and covered in natural palm thatch roofs, these beachside cabanas are haphazardly scattered along the golden sand with the Caribbean just a few short steps away.
We Love It Because: You’re comfortably close to but not-too-well-acquainted with nature. The beach huts are authentic and rustic, but also come with all our favourite comforts. Large private decking with fantastic views for sunset cocktail-sipping, stand-alone carved tree trunk bathtubs, massage therapists, and nothing to disturb your peace but the sound of the sea outside your door.

    From £208 per night
    Hotel Azulik

  • The Caves, Negril, Jamaica

The Location: Sitting pretty, high up on the stunning limestone cliffs of Negril’s West End district on the western tip of Jamaica.
The Look: A cluster of brightly coloured Cliffside cottages, hidden away amidst tropical gardens, looking out at incredible surrounding landscapes.
We Love It Because: Our very favourite, One Drop Cottage, blends clean white interiors with the warmth of luxurious red fabrics and painted windows. We love the cushioned window seat where you can watch the waves roll in, lolloping in the tranquility of your own private sanctuary.

From £280 per night on an all-inclusive basis
    The Caves

  • Casa Suaya, Jose Ignacio, Uruguay

The Location: Just down the road from party central Punta Del Este, on Uruguay’s southeast coast, Jose Ignacio is a quieter place to come and enjoy the stunning Uruguayan scenery.
The Look: Rustic with an edge of exclusivity, the little thatch-roof rooms here overlook the ocean and all have massive oh so comfy beds.
We Love It Because: This boutique hotel feels more like the home of a family friend…although unfortunately we don’t actually know anyone quite this cool. Laze by the pool sipping on delicious cocktails and listening to the DJ spin some great beach tunes, then spend sunsets with other guests on golden Uruguayan grains.

    From £127 per night
